Advantages of Heat Shrink Tube
Protection
One of the prime benefits of heat shrink tubing is the protection offered to wires and cables when exposed to a variety of conditions and environments. In factories and manufacturing plants, wires and cables are subject to abrasion, scuffing, splitting, and constant wear when left exposed.
Reduces Cable Stress
Though heat shrink tubing offers protection for cabling and wiring from exposure to environmental conditions, it also aids in preventing undue strain or stretching of wires and cables confined to insufficient space or length.
Insulation Properties
Insulation of electrical wires and cables is first and foremost required to prevent electrical shock. However, the insulation of wires and cables also prevents the loss and dissipation of energy being conducted through the wiring.
Organization
There may be no better argument for the application of heat shrink tubing of wires, cabling, and components than to organize them. Bundling wires and cables are not only aesthetically pleasing, but good cable management allows for easy access during maintenance of the system.
Corrosion Resistance
Over time, in any environment, when oxygen combines with the metal it forms a new compound called oxide that weakens the bonds of the metal itself, causing it to corrode.
Applications of Heat Shrink Tube

Protective sealant: Heat shrink tubing is often used to seal water and dust out of cables and cable splices. It is ideal for protecting home theater and personal computing connections from moisture.
Insulation from heat and chemicals: Extreme heat and exposure to chemicals can damage cables. Flame retardant heat shrink tubing can be used to insulate the wires of a car or boat's electrical system.
Easy identification: Cables tend to get tangled, which makes their routing hard to identify. Because heat shrink tubing comes in a variety of colors its ideal for color coding messy groups of network cables. Using heat shrink tubing for labeling is a smart alternative to labeling with adhesive tape due to the protective nature of the tubing itself.
Strain relief: Cables from your personal computer or home theater are often strained due to insufficient length or tight quarters. Fitting these cables with heat shrink tubing can relieve that strain, prolonging their life span in the process.
Tool grips: Heat shrink tubing can be shrunk to fit your tool handles, providing new grips where old ones have frayed or fallen off entirely. For a longer-lasting grip, use adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing.
Soldering: Instead of soldering, heat shrink tubing lined with conductive polymer film can be used to join two wire splices. The inner coating of polymer film creates an electrical connection, allowing you to join two wires and protect them simultaneously.
Professional appearance: Heat shrink tubing lends a professional quality to any custom computer case or custom automobile. Heat shrink tubing is a highly-adaptable tool that can be used in a wide variety of circumstances.
Adhesive-lined heat shrink: The dual-wall adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing is unlike any other cable management product. Once the heat is applied to the heat shrink's adhesive line (the polyolefin), melts to its intended source, ensuring a tight fit. The adhesive-lined heat shrink is also typically supplied in strips rather than the standard rolls.
Dual wall heat shrink: Dual wall heat shrink is built with an external layer of PTFE and an internal layer of FEP for double the resistance. PTFE/FEP dual wall heat shrink provides moisture, chemical and corrosion resistance while being reliable in high-temperature environments. This is a unique product that is only available through specific distributors and manufacturers.

Heat Shrink Tube Properties

Shape: Heat shrink tubing is available in two shapes: flat and round. The shape has no influence on the performance or functioning of the heat shrink tubing. Heat shrink tubing with a diameter up to 6,4 millimetres is always round, to make use easier. Heat shrink tubing with a diameter ranging from 6,4 up to 16 millimetres is available both flat and round. Heat shrink tubing with a diameter of 16 millimetres or higher, is always flat. Otherwise, it would be impossible to sell these sizes on a reel.
Inner diameter: The inner diameter is of importance when choosing the right size of heat shrink tubing. Always choose a diameter which is, after shrinking, a little bit smaller than the diameter of the cable. When a cable, for example, has a diameter of 9 millimetres, choose heat shrink tubing with an after shrink diameter of 8 millimetres, so that the heat shrink tubing fits tightly around the cable.

Apply the heat shrink over the substrate and heat evenly around the tube, working either from the middle out or from one end to the other. Gradually heat the product ensuring that no air is trapped under the tubing until full recovery is achieved.
Heat shrink tubing will also shrink in length (longitudinally) so as the tubing shrinks in diameter it is likely it will also shrink in length. Typically the longitudinal shrinkage is no more than 10%, although different products will have different tolerances. You must always take longitudinal shrinkage into consideration, especially when cutting the tube to length.
It is possible to minimise the longitudinal shrink by recovering the product at either end first and then working towards the centre. However, when doing this, care needs to be taken to avoid trapping air in the sleeve as this may restrict the product from recovering fully.
If the substrate onto which you are applying the heat shrink tubing is made of metal or any other heat conductive material, take the time and care to ensure that that the object is pre-heated to avoid cold spots. These cold spots can counteract the heating process and cause the tubing to recover irregularly.
